Here’s the thing most reviews don’t tell you upfront: the $10/month AI add-on is gone. Since mid-2025, full Notion AI is only available on the Business plan at $20/seat/month. If you’re searching for the old deal, it no longer exists.

What Changed: The Pricing Trap

Until May 2025, you could add Notion AI to any plan for $10/month. That deal is over.

If you’re a solo user who was paying $10/month for the AI add-on on a Plus plan, you’ve likely already seen a forced upgrade — or lost AI access entirely. For new users evaluating Notion AI, the minimum spend is $20/month.


What You Get on the Business Plan

The $20/month unlocks six AI features that don’t exist on lower tiers:

Notion Agent — the centrepiece. A multi-step AI that works inside your workspace. You give it a task (“draft a project brief from this database row”), it reads your existing pages and databases, and executes without you copying and pasting anything. It knows what’s already in your Notion because it has direct access.

AI Meeting Notes — connects to your calendar, joins calls (or transcribes recordings), and generates summaries with action items. If you run client calls, this one is genuinely useful from day one.

Enterprise Search — plain-English queries across Notion plus connected apps (Slack, Google Drive, GitHub). Ask “what did I send to the client in March?” and get an answer from your actual notes and files, not from guessing.

Research Mode — generates detailed reports by synthesising content from across your workspace. Useful for pulling together notes you’ve taken over weeks into a coherent document.

AI Writing Assistant — inline writing help: summarise, rewrite, expand, translate, autofill database fields. The same functions competitors offer, but without switching apps.

Database Autofill — tag and categorise rows automatically using rules you define. If you manage a content calendar or CRM in Notion, this saves real time.


Where Notion AI Actually Earns Its Keep

The use cases where Notion AI genuinely pulls ahead of alternatives share one feature: they require the AI to know what’s already in your workspace.

Client work management. You store project notes, SOPs, client history, and call records in Notion. When AI Meeting Notes logs a call, you can immediately ask the Agent to draft a follow-up email — without re-explaining who the client is, what you agreed, or what stage the project is at. No other $20/month AI tool does this without manual re-uploading.

Content operations. If you run your editorial calendar in Notion, the AI can generate article briefs from a title row, summarise previous drafts, and tag posts by topic or status automatically. For teams building out a content library, this removes significant admin.

Operating from a single workspace. Solopreneurs who use Notion as their entire business OS — project management, docs, CRM, knowledge base — get compounding value from AI that spans all of it. The switching cost of moving to a separate AI tool (and re-explaining context every session) is real.


Where It Falls Short

Writing quality is below Claude and ChatGPT. Notion AI uses a model optimised for workspace tasks, not frontier-level writing. For blog posts, client proposals, sales emails — anything where you need polished prose — a standalone AI tool will produce better output. This isn’t close. If you’re upgrading to Notion AI primarily to write better content, you’ll be disappointed.

The $20/month question is harder if you’re not already in Notion. The value here is context: the AI knows your workspace. If you’re not currently running your business in Notion, you don’t have that context yet — and a competitor (Coda, Taskade, even a well-organised Obsidian vault) might be a better starting point if AI integration matters from day one.

Offline support is poor. You can only view recently-opened pages without internet. No new pages, no AI, no access to content you haven’t visited recently. For solopreneurs who work on planes or in areas with unreliable connectivity, this is a genuine limitation.

Performance degrades with large databases. At 5,000+ records, expect 3–5 second load times and slow filtering. Not a year-one problem, but worth knowing if you’re building a long-term knowledge base.

Custom Agent credits add up. Automation-heavy users will hit the $10/1,000-credits tier on top of the $20/month base. Light users won’t notice; heavy automators should build this into their cost estimate.
